The original Café du Monde Coffee Stand, at 800 Decatur Street, was established at the upper end of the New Orleans French Market in 1862. Since then it has been serving its chicory flavored café au lait and French-style beignets 24 hours a day, 7 seven days a week, except for Christmas Day and when ""the occasional hurricane passes too close to New Orleans." Café du Monde has been owned by the Fernandez family since Hubert Fernandez purchased it from Fred Koeniger in 1942.

Café du Monde’s dark roasted Coffee and Chicory is traditionally served Au Lait, blended half and half with hot milk, but also acquirable black. Since 1988, it has also been offered iced. Coffee first came to North USA by way of New Orleans in the mid-1700′s. It was successfully cultivated in Martinique about 1720, and the French brought coffee with them as they began to settle new colonies along the Mississippi. The taste for coffee and chicory was developed by the French during their civil war. Coffee was scarce during those times, and they found that chicory added body and flavor to the brew. The Acadians from Nova Scotia brought this taste and many other french customs to Louisiana. Chicory is the root of the endive plant, which is roasted and ground and added to the coffee to soften the bitter edge, adding an slight chocolate flavor.

Beignets were also brought to Louisiana by the Acadians. These were fried fritters, sometimes filled with fruit. Today, the beignet is a square piece of dough, fried and covered with powdered sugar. The French-style doughnuts are served in orders of three at Café du Monde.

For over a century Café du Monde was one of two coffee stands in the market, but Morning Call, established in 1870, moved to Metairie in 1974. The Fernandez family expanded in 1985, with a second location in The Esplanade Mall, located in Kenner, and then again in 1986 in Rouse Co.’s Riverwalk Marketplace. While it once expanded as far away as Atlanta, Georgia, in current years the company has restricted its operation to the greater New Orleans metro area. Café du Monde locations can also be found throughout Japan.

Question by Jules Winnfield: Philosopher: Republicans: Do you realize that most of you are being used like Farmer John uses farm animals on cold winter?
nights?

The true Republican “base” in only about 10% of the population, the very wealthy individuals and corporations.

In order to have their chosen leaders elected they enlist the help of ordinary hard working chumps by poisoning your minds with imaginary enemies. They tell you that Obama is a Socialist who will clean out your wallet. They tell you that if we have fag unions which insist on their members being paid a living remuneration that the corporation will move to Mexico.

They purchase up most of the media outlets and hire slick sounding pundits and good looking babes with short skirts to appeal to your emotions and make you angry. They piss you off that Lula Mae Washington in New Orleans is taking all your hard attained tax dollars for her food stamps while Exxon paid NO TAX at all last year. Then they sit back and laugh at you.

We have elections coming soon and you will take the bait and bite into the fish hook once again,

The truth is that no matter who you think you are or where you think you are going, that you are just like me; working you asss off each day while you watch your paycheck shrink while the corporation makes more and more money off your meat and they pay less and less of their share of taxes.

You superior wake up and stop demonizing the Chocolate Man while we still have a country left.

Obama 2012

Event on 2011-01-06 20:00:00
FEATURING:
Cassandra Wilson, vocals
Other musicians, TBA

Read any of the dozen or so biographies on Cassandra Wilson and you’ll discover some basics: born and reared in Jackson, Mississippi in the 1960′s and 70′s by musician and educator parents. She studied piano for 13 years and played clarinet in the concert and marching bands of junior high school. During the 70′s, she could be found performing Joni Mitchell songs behind an acoustic guitar, or in front of a massive funk band, or in the company of long-time friends in an all-girls band.

In the eighties, Cassandra moved to New Orleans, and performed with peer Turbinton and Ellis Marsalis. Quite by accident, she was relocated to East Orange, New Jersey where she prefabricated a decision to take her chances on the New York Jazz scene. After a stint as the main vocalist with Steve Coleman’s M-Base Collective, Cassandra began recording on her own. Her development can be tracked through her discography. From the standards on Blue Skies to the Grammy-winning New Moon Daughter, to the combination of originals and interpretations played by a collection of Mississippi and New York musicians on both the 2001 release, Belly of the Sun, and 2003′s Glamoured, cassandra continues to evolve as a vocalist, songwriter, and producer.

In 2000, Wilson returned to Mississippi to establish Ojah Media Group. Ojah, a Youruba word meaning, “the marketplace,” is an independent multi-media entity dedicated to documenting and marketing the one-of-a-kind sounds emanating from Mississippi’s fertile soil, and its multi-cultural influences. Ojah’s premiere artist, singer-songwriter Rhonda Richmond, released her first CD, Oshogbo Town (produced by Wilson and engineered by Sean Mackie) in 2003. Richmond’s second CD, Rhythm and Strings, another Wilson/Mackie collaboration, released Spring 2006/ Inspired by the Yoruba Deity, Oshun, both Oshogbo Town and Rhythm and Strings feature the original compositions and arrangements for which Richmond is celebrated.

Cassandra Wilson is a world renowned vocalist, songwriter and producer, with an breathtaking following, but at heart she is still a Mississippi girl whose art reflects her deep musical and cultural roots, anchored in the fertile Mississippi soil.

Silver Pony is the stunning new album from Ms. Wilson, released by EMI’s Blue Note Records on November 9.

A one-of-a-kind hybrid live/studio album, Silver Pony moves seamlessly between live recordings from a European tour and studio recordings ordered down at New Orleans’ Piety Street Studios. The album features a mix of jazz/pop classics as well as songs newly-written by Cassandra and her band.

Silver Pony draws its title from an experience which Cassandra had as a child and which left an indelible mark in her memory bank, and thus on her career itself. “A man came around my neighborhood in Jackson, Mississippi, with a pony and camera,” she recalls. “You could pay to get your picture taken.” Her brothers declined, but Cassandra was eager. Her mom hesitated-”there were certain things young ladies just didn’t do,” Wilson adds. But Cassandra seized the moment, got the picture. “I’m so happy she let me ride the pony,” she states now. “I was fearless, and I guess she wanted to encourage that in me.” That priceless pic is now featured on the cover of “Silver Pony,” and such fearlessness now fuels Wilson’s work. “I prepare for apiece recording but you can never truly prepare,” Wilson says. “Because you don’t really know what’s coming. You just place yourself in the circumstances that will grant the project to reveal itself.”

Silver Pony was produced by Cassandra Wilson and John Fischbach (owner of Piety Street Recording Studios) and features Cassandra on vocals and synthesizer, Marvin Sewell on electric guitar, Jonathan Batiste on piano, Reginald Veal on electric bass, Herlin Riley on drums, and Lekan Babalola on percussion. Ravi Coltrane adds saxophone on “Silver Moon” and “Watch The Sunrise” features both vocals and piano by John Legend.

Question by goindians1100: Looking at moving to the New Orleans area of LA because of a job. I have a family so any coments would be good?
I live in Ohio now and am being moved by my company to the New Orleans Baton Rouge area and am wondering, where should i think about for raising my family. Not knowing the south or LA i am not sure where to begin. My children are 11 and 7 and i am looking for good schools and low crime. I am middle income and do not want to be near celebration centeral.
Thansk to Judy and the doc so far for great info

Best answer:

Answer by Judy
Make sure you get the ideal realtor with the most local experience you could possibly find.

I am a wife, and a mom.
I actually selected my own location with digilent reasearch.
I googled the schools with the highest ACT scores in the city.
After that, I reseached property taxes, crime rates.
If forgot the sites that told me ACT scores for apiece high school
Just google Baton Rouge ACT scores – that will be a start.

Usually (almost always), the district with the highest ACT scores have the lowest crime.
A realtor might not be aware of the school statistics.
Don’t go by middle school stats – they’ll be in high school soon enough.
Live close enough so they can drive to LSU when they graduate.

I still have the books of printouts I did from my last move.
It was a lot of work – but you can select the ideal this way.
Note: If you purchase a home near a high school, it will hold it’s value better.
Ohio to Baton rouge – sounds like an engineer.
Enjoy milder weather – your wife will love it.

Note: You might have taken the SAT up north.
In the south and easterly coast the ACT is used more.

49ers-Rams Preview
In each other NFC division, the St. Louis Rams and San Francisco 49ers would have already been eliminated from postseason contention. They have the benefit of playing in the NFC West, however, and still have a shot at hosting a playoff game. These teams meet Sunday in St. Louis, and even though the outcome won’t make or break the Rams’ postseason chances, the 49ers would finally be eliminated…
